Proper Use – Ball Peen Hammers

Ball peen hammer with the head left. Yellow and black handle with AMPCO written on yellow section of hammer

Proper Use:

Ball peen hammers of the proper size are designed for striking chisels and punches, and for riveting, shaping and straightening unhardened metal.

When striking a struck tool (chisel or punch), the striking face of the hammer should have a diameter at least 3/8″ larger than the struck face of the tool.

Mis-Use/Abuse:

Strike squarely and avoid glancing blows that may cause the edge of the face to chip, possibly resulting in eye or other serious injury. Never strike with or against the side, or cheek, of any hammer.
